Hi all am taking my 15 year old nephew skiing again he has been with us for 2 weeks over last 2 years.Problem he has is he can go down slopes ok and turns but when it comes to stopping he carries on across piste.
I've tried to explain technique (hockey stop etc) but find it difficult to describe. He's also had about 4 private lessons and we'll have more lessons this Jan.
Can anyone offer any advice
Thanks

Stopping with wedged ski is not an effective way to stop, and reinforces wedge skiing. Stopping while first learning to ski, is best learned by turning back up the hill, the same way that speed should be controlled. As other skills progress, the uphill turn can be sharpened into a hockey stop.
You could encourage speed control through making turns, with rewards when you take a break in a chalet (at fifteen, it may be extra time on the computer that evening, might be a better reward).

I learned the snowplough/wedge during the early 80's, and I still use it. Instinctively my body knows it's the fastest way to stop on a crowded path (for example), so it has it's place in my skillset.
I find it most effective. I've also seen that predominantly it's men who claim it to be ineffective. This may be due to differences in anatomy.

It is really strange that if I ever need to snowplough which is seldom, it seems i'm not very good at it, I guess it is about rarely using the technique

I do see Pisteurs using the wedge quite a bit. I see them replacing marker poles and taking blood wagons down the piste. Seems they find a use for the technique :D

Spray him with snow with an aggressive 'hockey stop'. He'll want to get his own back and will learn how in the process!
