It's reported that 4 skiers are dead in an avalanche, from a group of 7 skiers with an Instructor.

Henrys Avalanche Talk, has the details.

Sounds like a massive avalanche. Very sad indeed.

Radio Val d'Isere suggests the slide was 750 metres long and 250 metres wide. It ran the entire length of the slope to the valley floor and the river. Not wholly sure of which ski school or guide company was leading, Top Ski have been mentioned in some bulletins.

Apparently they barely stood a chance so for some to survive is amazing. As you can imagine, being in the same vicinity, the resort is awash with chat about it. Terribly sad. A lot more snow coming down now, so am expecting a barrage of avalanche guns at some point.

I took part in a Webinar run by Henry's Avalanche Talks tonight. The professionals view is that the avalanche today is unlikely to have been caused by the small amount of fresh snow that has fallen.
It was a massive slab avalanche, and there is known to be an unstable layer of old snow (depth hoar, like sand)) that exists underneath the crust. This is likely to last all season.

Would certainly make me think twice if that`s the case......
