Andy,
May I add the following ?
I agree with you that enjoyment is the key,,,the very first condition we all desire while skiing!
To me enjoyment comes by "being one with ski" ! That is the ski is an extension of my body! I think to turn and ski turns !
In short I am a "lazy skier" at my age ! I avoid all useless motions that have nothing to do with doing "effective skiing" !
I do not focus on "technique" while I ski. I never talk about technique while I ski ( unless someone asks for,,,,,)
To me skiing against the terrain, against the ski, against the snow is not "enjoyable" !
As far as "competition" again you are so right! The beauty of skiing is that you establish what you want out of this activity! My groups are all +60 year old skiers because at this age you have no desire to see who will be first down, who will go into the deepest snow, who has longest/shortest most expensive ski!
The only competition I have is with myself. I know when I am lazy, when I give up, when make a mistake !
In conclusion for me "effective" is not mutually exclusive with pleasure! It is a stepping stone to skiing happiness! I believe we all want to be "better" at what we do!
There is a saying in the ski coaching world.
"Nothing creates success better than success" You feel happy skiing well,,,,you feel want to come back!
Andy,,what I would like to know is , "what is enjoymentt for you" !
For me it is the sun, the wind, freedom and soaring on snow !
I am sure it is also for you!
Enjoy your 2012 ski season !
Pavel

I really like the paintings of Letitia Lussier, they are very similar in style to an artist/skier friend who I learned a lot from.
However she isn't in her 70s, she is in her 50s.
I was thinking that she is a bit restricted in the choice of her Alpine subjects, (90% Deer Park), but then I thought, who am I to talk! (90% Niederau!)
Another North Ameriacn mountain/alpine painter I like is Bev Doolittle, but then she has her own special tricks!
