Hi All,
I’m looking for an easy to read / coffee table style book that I can leave “lying around” for guests to explore the issues of Avalanche Safety. I’m thinking a good combination of pictures to grab the attention and some simple easy to follow words that might get recalled if needed.
I don’t know if such a book exists but all recommendations would be very welcome.
And before anyone says, “You need to undertake a 6 week hands on course, including at least 6 burials and 20 searches before you have any idea what’s going on” I’m sure you’re right, but what I’m looking for is a way to engage the interest of guests who would never give the issue a second thought. Not to teach them the ins and outs of the technical side of formation, triggers, searches etc, etc …
Thanks,
Jan

Not exactly what you're after but David George, of PisteHors, does an annual review of French avalanche statistics, that's easy to read and very good at concentrating the mind on the salient points (the foremost being that "what you don't know, can kill you").
It's available in a PDF, so you can leave several lying around and replace if your guests want to take it away (which would be a good thing!). Can be reproduced for "educational purposes" which I think would cover what you have in mind but best check with David before firing up your printing press...
The analysis of the 2007/8 season can be found here.
Simply being aware that there is a danger (of death) is a great first step toward safer skiing.
